Field of Flags Update

The Norfolk Lions are communicating the following clarification to the purpose and meaning of the ‘Field of Flags’, to be placed on Town Hill from May 17th through May 30th, 2020. Although detailed mailings went out to all Norfolk residents and businesses early last week, the Norfolk Lions wish to clarify and emphasize the fact that the intent of both the flags/donations made, and the true meaning of Memorial Day, is to remember those service members who gave their lives for our great country. The dedications and donations made will be ‘in remembrance’ of those brave, fallen military heroes.

In addition, although we are committed to placing the flags on Town Hill this year, we’re painfully aware of the unprecedented changes in our lives and activities that the COVID-19 outbreak has presented. Accordingly, the Lions have made the decision to cancel the formal dedication ceremony, scheduled to take place on Memorial Day morning, after the Norfolk Memorial Day parade. We regret having to make this decision, but feel that it is in the best interest of Norfolk residents, given the close proximity required of a gathering around our town gazebo.

As a reminder, residents and non-residents alike can make online donations at the Norfolk Lions website www.norfolkmalions.org .

The Lions still believe that having the flags placed on Town Hill will be a welcome and positive reminder to us all during these troubled times. As in past years, all net proceeds from flag sales will be donated to the Fisher House of Boston, an outstanding organization that helps serve our military and their families. The Fisher House of Boston provides a home away from home where military families can stay while loved ones is receive in-house medical treatment in Boston medical facilities or the VA Healthcare Systems in West Roxbury. The Norfolk Lions hope that residents and families will be able to visit the Town Hill Field of Flags – with the appropriately necessary cautions – and enjoy this beautiful tribute to the men and women in our military that sacrificed their lives for our freedom and our way of life.
